SAF’s Make It Better Programme offers a Roy of hope

This month, the Sovereign Art Foundation launched the new semester of its Make It Better Programme (MIB), which offers weekly expressive arts’ activities to children from low-income backgrounds and with special educational needs (SEN) in Hong Kong.

Our dedicated team of registered Expressive Arts therapists recruited over 100 SEN children from some of the cities’ most disadvantaged neighbourhoods over the summer. A total of 14 groups will attend our weekly workshops this year, consisting of seven groups of primary school students and seven groups of kindergarten children.

They are all now embarking on their art journey with MIB, which focuses on building creativity, exploration and personal growth, and will run through until June 2025.

Looking back at the previous semester, we would like to share a story about one of our primary school beneficiaries, Roy. A child living with ADHD, he often feels overwhelmed and uncertain.

His caregivers have been trying to find ways to help him manage his anxiety and improve his self-control, which led to him joining the MIB Programme last year. Thanks to our generous donors, Roy found a supportive environment where he could learn and grow at his own pace.

Through various expressive art activities led by our therapists, Roy began to find effective ways to express his emotions. He learned to articulate his feelings and connect with others, marking a significant breakthrough for him.

“With the guidance of MIB’s expressive arts therapists, Roy is learning to navigate social interactions more confidently,” his grandmother said. Her comments highlight the positive changes Roy has experienced since joining the Programme.

As we begin the new semester, our team are enthusiastic about the journey ahead. We look forward to sharing more stories of growth and transformation from our beneficiaries. To support more students like Roy, please consider donating or learning more about our work.
