The UAE introduced the Wages Protection System (WPS), a mandatory electronic salary transfer system that was established by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) in collaboration with the Central Bank of UAE, in 2009.

The WPS is designed to ensure the timely and accurate payment of workers’ salaries electronically through accredited financial institutions according to the terms set out in their employment contracts. The protection of employees’ wages is of strategic importance in the UAE because a significant portion of the workforce is made up of expatriates.

For employers, the WPS streamlines the payroll process through automation and provides legal proof in case of disputes. However, failing to comply with the WPS regulations can result in severe penalties, including fines, work permit suspensions and prosecutions.

How does our Payroll Service work on a monthly basis?


When processing payroll on a monthly basis, Sovereign PPG will start by collaborating with the client to finalise the payroll calculations for the month, ensuring all changes and updates are accurately reflected. We will provide guidance on payroll-related matters, ensuring full compliance with the latest regulatory and legal requirements.

Necessary adjustments to the payroll can be made, based on the client’s requests. These adjustments can include non-financial updates, such as changes to banking details or job titles, as well as financial changes like new hires, resignations, leave pay calculations, promotions and loan deductions.

We will also account for various types of leave, including annual, sick, maternity and unpaid leave, as well as ensuring that pension deductions are processed for UAE and GCC nationals.

Once all adjustments are finalised, we will execute the monthly payroll using our in-house system, generating and distributing electronic payslips to employees by the agreed date. For employees leaving the company, we will handle their final settlement as part of the payroll process. We will also create the Salary Information File (SIF) in line with the bank’s requirements, ensuring the smooth transfer of funds.

To ensure accuracy, we will conduct a thorough review of any variances between the current payroll and the previous month’s data. In addition, we will generate customised payroll reports based on the client’s specifications and prepare payroll-related journal entries, which can be seamlessly integrated into the client’s accounting system for streamlined financial management.
