Mauritius and the Philippines consider tax treaty negotiations
Officials from Mauritius and the Philippines met on 11 September to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties, including the negotiation of an income tax treaty.
The Philippines’ Ambassador to Mauritius Noralyn Jubaira Baja visited Attorney General and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Maneesh Gobin in Port Louis.
In a statement after the meeting, she indicated that discussions with the Minister had focused on how to strengthen bilateral ties between both countries after several agreements that had been under negotiation had come to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also said that other topics covered had included food and trade, using Mauritius as a financial hub, and negotiating a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).
Any resulting treaty would be the first of its kind between the two countries and would have to be negotiated, signed and ratified before entering into force.
